Marcasite

Carlton is proud to introduce a fine quality of Sterling silver marcasite jewellery finished in rhodium

Marcasite jewellery is frequently made by setting small pieces into silver. The history surrounding Marcasite jewellery begins with it being made since the time of the Ancient Greeks. It was particularly popular in the eighteenth century, the Victorian era and with Art Nouveau jewellers.

Marcasite became popular with nobility in 1861 when Prince Albert and Queen Victoria entered a period of mourning, requiring her entire court to wear black and avoid opulent jewellery. Marcasite became popular as an understated alternative.
